UCOL in My Eyes | Connecting the Beauty of Home and UCOL

10月20日中午，新西兰北帕默斯顿市市长格兰特·史密斯先生来到西安文理学院。北帕默斯顿学院2026级新生王予骞同学在明德楼D104会议室，用英语向市长和在场师生分享“我眼中的UCOL”。“I am very proud to be part of the joint programme of Xi'an University and Universal College of Learning.”她来自软件工程2602班。

On the noon of 20 October, Mr Grant Smith, Mayor of Palmerston North, New Zealand, visited Xi'an University. Lillian, a freshman of the Palmerston North Institute, shared "UCOL in My Eyes" with the Mayor and the audience in English in the meeting room (Room D104) of the Mingde Building. "I am very proud to be part of the joint programme of Xi'an University and Universal College of Learning." She is a freshman in Class 2602 of software engineering.

聊起UCOL，王予骞同学最先想到的是新西兰的自然风光。她想象自己漫步在宁静的小路上，绿树环绕、空气清新，金黄的落叶在秋风中轻轻飘落；旺加努伊河静静流淌，倒映着天空与两岸绿意，远处的山丘勾勒出新西兰乡村的画卷。“To me, this beautiful environment would make studying at UCOL not only an educational experience, but also a wonderful journey of discovery”——在她看来，在这样的环境里学习，UCOL带来的不仅是教育经历，更是一场美好的发现之旅。

When talking about UCOL, what first comes to Lillian's mind is the beautiful natural scenery of New Zealand. She imagines walking along a peaceful path surrounded by green trees and fresh air, with golden leaves falling gently in autumn, while the nearby Whanganui River flows quietly through the landscape, reflecting the sky and the surrounding greenery, with rolling hills in the distance. "To me, this beautiful environment would make studying at UCOL not only an educational experience, but also a wonderful journey of discovery," she said.

王予骞同学接着讲到：“UCOL还有一段迷人的历史。它的故事始于1892年，悠久的办学传统与当地社区的发展紧密相连。在旺加努伊，历史建筑与传统街巷诉说着过去的故事。它们独特的建筑——红砖老墙、传统窗棂、精致的细节——营造出历史与现代相遇的独特氛围。我能想象自己课间走过这些建筑，知道一代又一代学生曾在这片土地追逐梦想。在我看来，这正是教育的真谛——尊重过去、享受当下、准备未来。”

Lillian continued: "Beyond its natural beauty, UCOL also has a fascinating history. Its story began in 1892, and its long educational tradition is closely connected with the development of the local community. In Whanganui, historic buildings and traditional streets tell stories of the past. Their distinctive architecture, with old brick walls, traditional windows, and elegant details, creates a special atmosphere where history and modern life meet. I find it fascinating to imagine walking past these historic buildings on my way to class, knowing that generations of students have pursued their dreams in this region. For me, this represents the true meaning of education: respecting the past, enjoying the present, and preparing for the future."

她对UCOL的了解目前还来自网络，还没有机会亲身前往。但她希望，在三四年级或更远的未来，能有机会到UCOL学习，亲眼看看那里的山水与校园。

Lillian's knowledge of UCOL currently comes from online, and she has not yet had the opportunity to experience it in person. But she hopes that in her third or fourth year, or perhaps in the future, she will have the chance to study at UCOL and discover its beauty for herself.

此刻，她的旅程从西安启程——她期待有一天，把家乡之美与新西兰之美连接在一起。

For now, Lillian's journey begins here in Xi'an. She looks forward to the day when she can connect the beauty of her hometown with the beauty of New Zealand.
